Befor a Brushfire

1. Place combustible items (like outdoor furniture) inside. Avoid keeping combustibles like firewood or compost piles under or near your home or shed.

2. Seal up attic and ground vents, windows, and other openings with pre-cut painted plywood to keep out sparks.

3. Clean Pine needles, leaves and other debris from your roof at least 4 times a year. Shingles are made of fiberglass and will not burn from sparks landing on them, however, combustible materials lying on your roof will ignite and may go undetected by firefighters due to heavy smoke from the woods fire.

4. Connect garden hoses to outside water faucets. Connect enough hose to reach around your house and onto the roof. Have a SPRAY type lawn sprinkler available to place on your roof. Turn on your lawn sprinklers and the roof sprinkler ahead of the fire to pre-wet your home and yard because electricity often goes off during a wild fire due to burning power poles.

5. Turn off all propane tanks. If you have propane service to your home turn it off by shutting the valve at the meter. (When service is restored remember to re-light the pilot lights)

6. Keep all valuable papers and memorabilia in a safe place. Keep wedding, child and other non replaceable picture negatives in safety deposit box or at the home of a family member.

Have an Evacuation Plan:

Have an escape route and a meeting place. Teach your children the plan. Fire proof your home and make decisions for a fast "GET-AWAY". Don't forget to plan for your pets. Teach your children your cellular and work phone numbers.

During a Brush Fire
Close all windows and doors. This will prevent sparks from blowing inside. Close Venetian / mini blinds and heavy drapes. This keeps out heat and provides additional safety in case heat or wind breaks the windows. Move all furniture away from the windows and sliding doors. This will reduce the possibility of ignition by radiant heat. If fire comes within 300 feet of your house, EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY!! High winds and radiant heat can quickly blow this fire onto your house before you have a chance to escape.
